Creamsource on the set of American Assassin
Speed, flexibility…modern look. Just what an Assassin needs
“American Assassin is set in the present day, so we wanted to give it a modern feel. To achieve this we used Creamsource LED fixtures – which gave us flexibility with the colour palette. They are also very quick to rig and adjust on set, which was paramount since we were a tight schedule,” said Jonathan Spencer, Gaffer. “I had only previously used the Creamsource Doppio, but I was very impressed with the Creamsource Sky – it’s a great soft light with a very impressive spread.”
The movie follows the rise of Mitch Rapp (Dylan O’Brien), a CIA black ops recruit instructed by Cold War veteran Stan Hurley (Michael Keaton). When CIA Deputy Director Irene Kennedy (Sanaa Lathan) calls on them to investigate a wave of apparently random attacks they discover an ominous pattern. This leads them to a joint mission with a lethal Turkish agent (Shiva Negar) to stop a mystery man (Taylor Kitsch) intent on starting a World War.
Flashbandit. Jonathan made use of Outsight’s popular Flashbandit accessory to sync the Creamsource built-in flicker effects with the camera’s frame rate and shutter. “We needed a gunfire effect, which is quite difficult with getting the effect on full frame with a rolling shutter. With the Flashbandit and the Creamsource Doppio+, this worked really well,” he said. The Flashbandit prevents torn frames (a flash in the bottom one frame followed by a flash in the top of the next frame) when flash or strobe is not properly timed to camera shutter and frame rate.
Creamsource Doppio+ features a fourth-generation LED light engine, offering greater than 90 CRI/TLCI. The versatility of the ‘panel PAR’ provides a spot beam from the panel that can be softened with traditional techniques such as diffusion, lenses and soft boxes.
Creamsource Sky – the original high power, full-spectrum soft-source luminaire incorporates sophisticated colour management (calibrated CCT adjustable from 2200K to 15000K and full RGBWA control). It provides 1200W of LED power and superb colour rendition, with a typical CRI of 95. It’s rugged casing and water resistance makes it ideal for location work as well as studio production.
